What Employers Need To Know About DOT FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Testing

If you employ safety-sensitive workers who must have Department of Transportation (DOT) drug and alcohol tests, or you manage a DOT drug or alcohol testing program, this publication can help you understand how to run an excellent program that meets DOT requirements.

When you have any drug or alcohol violation you will need to be evaluated by a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) in order to develop a return to duty program. Follow this link for a list of qualifies SAP's. https://www.naadac.org/sap-directory

Prior to having a prospective new hire take a pre-employment drug test they must be given a copy of your drug and alcohol company policy and sign the receipt (enclosed in the sample policy).
Please note that this is a sample company policy and as of February 2020 and meets the FMCSA requirements for a company drug and alcohol policy with the new requirement to have employees sign a consent to a query in the FMCSA Clearinghouse. This is not intended to meet all city and state individual requirements for a drug free workplace company policy.
